Tuesday of this week saw the UK launch of India Hicks’ new book ‘A Slice of England’: a personal account of the fabulous properties which have shaped her own architectural leanings since childhood.
A follow-up to her New York Times bestselling book, 'India Hicks: Island Style', ‘A Slice of England’ is the designer's exploration of her British heritage and how she has expressed it in her newly finished English country house in Oxfordshire. The book is divided into two parts. Part One 'Legacy', is the story of her family’s homes, including the renowned Broadlands Estate, and her parents' houses, Britwell and the Grove, as well as her father David Hicks’ famous garden. The second half of the book is the story of the new Hicks-Flint Wood home, America Farm, a stunning example of how India and her husband David Flint Wood have reinterpreted English tradition to make it their own. In the book India covers life upstairs and downstairs, on the grounds and in the surrounding country, including local pubs, circuses, and markets. Enriched with stories of India’s life growing up as British and design royalty, this is a book about the power of houses with family history, and the joy of adapting them for modern life.
Designed by architects NicholsBrownWebber , America Farm was completed two years ago. Built entirely by the Barr Group ( StuartBarr CDR , BarrJoinery and BarrKitchens ) America Farm is so much more than just a house, rather a fabulous second home for a family whose roots draw them back from their breezy Bahamian lifestyle. Ian Brown, working alongside Andrew Nichols, as America Farm architects, commented on the architectural joinery: "I was very impressed with the quality of the Barr Group’s work on America Farm. There were many intricate components including box sashes, internal shutters, raised and fielded doors and these, together with the kitchen and bathroom fittings, were executed with great skill and attention to detail" .
From India herself: “all at the Barr Group...who made our lives bliss (not hell) for 2 years”
A Slice of England was published by Rizzoli, New York and is now available in the UK. This book will adorn your shelves and coffee tables for years to come – as well inspiring you to dig deep into your own aesthetic influences and reflect on the things with which you surround yourself.
