Design inspiration sometimes comes from sources we least expect. When BarrJoinery surveyor and designer James Knight was designing a commissioned display piece an image must have flashed through his consciousness from over a year earlier. When working on cabinetry for the Absolut Vodka ELYX Brand Home in Sweden BarrJoinery cabinetry was photographed alongside an unusual set of display boxes spanning 2 walls of the space….
The design brief for the Long Crendon shelving commission (top image) asked for a focal interest point for an expansive open plan living space. The client requested that the piece truly fit the space and the contemporary style of the building. James took the oblong shapes of the surrounding glass and wood burner as a building block and used the ceiling and internal walls as touch points to ensure the cabinetry became an integral part of the room.
There is no doubt however that, however subliminally, Shaun Clarkson’s display shelving for the Absolut Brand Home (image beneath) was a design influence on their Long Crendon counterparts. The clean lines and quirky Scandi design character came through strongly in both pieces - even down to the irregular patterns and clip detail.
BarrJoinery furniture commission briefs come to us in many forms. Some clients have a very specific idea of what they want, some have an image they would like to emulate and others come to us with a blank sheet.
